Ganghwahyanggyo was established during the Joseon dynasty to enshrine and honor prominent Confucian scholars and to educate the local people. In Joseon, it was provided with land, land registers and slaves from the government to educate 30 Confucian students. After Gabo Reforms, it no longer performed its educational functions. Today, it holds Confucian rites in spring and autumn and burns incense on the first and 15th days of each month.
